About Gillian Cannell

Hello,

I am a professional counsellor with over 14 years experience and during that time I have been privileged to help many people on their road to health both as individuals and in group sessions.  Our modern lives can be complicated and we may feel confused or worried by the way we are thinking and feeling. Sometimes it is not always easy to confide in friends or family who are emotionally connected and close to us.

I have been trained to create the right conditions to help you talk and explore what is concerning you and find the right way forward.  You may be feeling anxious or sad, having experienced a bereavement, or at a crossroad, wanting to learn more about yourself and to build your self-awareness, confidence and self-worth.

As an integrative counsellor I place high importance on developing with you a good therapeutic relationship, and it is important that from the start of our work you feel safe to talk and express yourself in a confidential, supportive and constructive environment.

Although the mainstay of my work is relational I am trained in other therapeutic models as well including CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) and TA (Transactional Analysis) which we can draw upon if appropriate during our work together.

Personal counselling with me can be in one of my therapy rooms locally either for a short number of sessions or a longer term arrangement.  I specialise particularly in helping people with:-  Relationships, bereavement counselling, low mood and depression, conflict, anger, anxiety, panic attacks, low self-worth, low self-confidence, stress.

Alternatively, you may be interested in joining a closed group of 5 – 7 members to take part in an interpersonal group therapy programme.

Group therapy is a unique opportunity of sharing your therapeutic experience with others.  Within the confidential group where trust develops, through your relationships with other members of the group you will gradually develop your interpersonal skills and establish new affirming ways of being with others.

Here are some of the benefits of Group psychotherapy:

You can learn to communicate more openly in all your relationships
Gain a better sense of yourself through being part of a shared therapeutic group
An opportunity to experience helping others as well as helping yourself
Become more assertive
Learn ways of dealing with conflict and difference
Learn how to express feelings
Learn your difficulties, thoughts and feelings may be shared by others.
Belong to and feel accepted by a group
Build your confidence in social situations
Establish new and affirming ways of being with others

If you are interested in joining a group please contact me for more information.

It is my belief that the value of any work you do with a counsellor is dependent upon a good therapeutic relationship, therefore we can have a short introductory discussion over the phone with no charge or alternatively you might like to take advantage of an initial assessment session lasting 30 minutes which will be an opportunity for you to meet me and assess whether you feel comfortable for us to work together. I look forward to meeting you!
