About Pauljacksoncounselling

I offer Counselling in the Canterbury, Kent Area:

I worked for over 30 years in the NHS Mental Health Service before retiring in the latter part of 2013. I now work part time in private practice.

After I qualified as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) I spent some time working in the generic mental health services.

Following this and for over 20 years I worked in a Therapeutic Day Unit for those with substance misuse difficulties. Being a therapeutic unit, this work encompassed not only the presenting difficulty of substance misuse, but also the ongoing work with those problems that invariably were underlying. Accordingly, this involved short and long term counselling interventions, group and family work as well as often working with formal, psychiatric diagnosis. In this time, I undertook Diploma level substance specific and generic counselling training and since 2001 have been a BACP Accredited Counsellor.

Much of the Substance misuse counselling was from a problem solving, Cognitive Behavioural perspective whereas the generic counselling training was Integrative, primarily drawing from the Psychodynamic and Person Centred Schools of thought.
For the 3 years prior to my retirement the service was commissioned to offer a limited Counselling facility for clients of up to 12 sessions. This was created with Volunteer Counsellors and I was responsible for their supervision, the initial client assessment and referral and carried a caseload myself.

In addition to my work with the NHS I have always done sessional work as a Counsellor to keep my experiences broad, regularly supervised Counselling Students, Supervised staff from other agencies and been involved in Training and Teaching on various Counselling courses.

From a Counselling perspective, I think I am very experienced in working with all presenting difficulties, in providing short and long term counselling and have a solid, safe grounding from which to practice.

I fully abide by the BACP ethical framework and code of practice.
