About Juliet Birkbeck Counselling

I run an independent practice in South Manchester and also work as a counselor for the LGBT foundation in Manchester City Center. I am a member of the BACP and hold a Diploma in Person Centered Counselling and Psychotherapy. My previous career was in education. I worked as a senior leader in a secondary school in Oldham with my primary focus being on the provision of services for students with Special Needs, child Protection work and the support of newly arrived pupils from round the world including asylum seekers and refugees. I was also involved in setting up the forced Marriage Forum in Oldham after the murder of a friend and colleague.

I work with clients on a wide range of issues including but not limited to: bereavement, loss of jobs and homes, relationship difficulties, issues to do with body image, consequences of historic childhood abuse, parenting issues, isolation and loneliness anxiety and low self-esteem. A lot of my work is to do with the impact in adulthood of difficult childhood experiences. I’m also interested in working with people who are experiencing conflict between one or more important aspects of their lives ie faith and sexual identity or community expectations and personal desires.

I have been involved in voluntary work with a variety of groups over the last thirty years. I worked initially with young men on probation in the North East of England and also with young women newly arrived in the UK from Pakistan. I worked with the housebound and elderly in both the North East and the North West and more recently with refugees and asylum seekers in Manchester.

I am committed to working with people ethically and abide by the BACP’s Code of Ethics. This requires me to take the responsibility of maintaining confidentiality very seriously. My practice is overseen by an experienced supervisor as required by the BACP and although I present casework to her this is always done anonymously.
