About Tanya Nielson

I am a BACP Senior Accredited and Registered Counsellor/ Psychotherapist and also a counselling supervisor. I enjoy working creatively to support your therapeutic goals and to support your psychosocial skills and resiliency.

I am trained and experienced in a variety of therapeutic models including: solution focused practice, CBT, EMDR, psychodynamic, attachment, narrative, solution focused, systemic theories, sand tray, play therapy, journaling, therapeutic poetry and art work.

I work with adults, children, young people and families and work transculturally.
When we meet I will endeavour to support you to identify what it is that troubles you and your hopes for the work that we will embark on together. In this process, I will pay full attention to your personal circumstances, cultural/ social context with a sense of presence, acceptance, authenticity, inclusion and respect to you and your experiences. I will aim to support you to build on your internal resources and resilience.

I encourage the development of a trusting respectful working relationship in order for you to feel supported in your counselling process. I value the therapeutic relationship that can be a transformative one that can enable us to increase our capacity for accepting our wounds and hurts through a more compassionate lens.

You may have experienced a sense of low self-esteem/ self-worth due to their early experiences of being misunderstood or unaccepted for who they are or who have experienced neglectful parenting or trauma. This needs a sensitive approach and a space where you can be fully heard and with my care and presence.

You may be struggling with current losses, relationship difficulties, adversity, be in a transitional space or have a sense of longing that you cannot make sense of. I will support you be listening out for the places where you are feel lost, fearful, powerless or where there maybe limiting self-beliefs that are not serving you. All of this is welcome in the counselling space with me.

The framework in which I work values the diversity of our experiences, who we are or can be and life in all its contradictions, experiences and depth. I draw upon a number of psychological models and frameworks including those that focus on our developmental experiences, early trauma/loss and also aspects of self that we feel have been underdeveloped. I have a creative approach that values all aspects of the self – mind, body and soul. In the work I see that whatever is troubling you can be seen as a signal to parts of the self that may need attention, understanding or transformation.

I have some useful tools and whether this be sand tray, mindfulness, art or utilising dreams or the imagination to support the work. I also have trainings in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy( CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing(EMDR) that can work well with areas such as anxiety or trauma.

I work within the ethical framework of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists and work in a way that is confidential, empathic, sensitive and respectful of all that you bring. I will also pay attention to the dynamics unfolding between us and seek with you to build bridges where we can meet in this joint endeavour. The work can be challenging too as we endeavour to enable change to take place and so I will encourage a compassionate approach throughout.
