Identity Shift
Counsellor in Skipton, North Yorkshire
Hi, I’m Greg, a qualified counsellor, therapist and life coach and a Registered Member MBACP. I offer a bespoke approach to counselling and therapy, bringing together professional training, lived experience and an understanding that every person who sits in front of me brings their own story, experiences and way of viewing themself and the world.
My own life experiences have shaped both the person and practitioner I am today. There was a time when I needed support and guidance myself, and experiencing therapy and coaching from the client’s perspective changed the direction of my life. That journey eventually became years of professional training, continued learning and working with others, but it also gave me an understanding that professional training alone cannot provide.
You may be experiencing anxiety, low mood, overthinking or a lack of confidence. Perhaps you feel lost or stuck, are struggling within a relationship, facing challenges personally or professionally, or have reached a point where you simply know something in your life no longer feels right. Your life may even look successful from the outside, yet inside you know something is missing. You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out.
A central part of my work is helping you develop deeper self-awareness and understand what may be driving your thoughts, feelings, behaviours and choices. Throughout our lives we can develop limiting beliefs, emotional rules and patterns that influence us without us fully recognising them. When we begin making what is unconscious more conscious, we can better understand why we respond as we do, what may be holding us back and where different choices become possible.
My belief is that therapy is not about only looking backwards and coaching is not simply about pushing forwards. We can explore the past when it helps us understand where you are today, work with what is happening in your life now and use that understanding to create greater clarity about where you want to go and who you want to become. For me, the most powerful work often connects all three.
Relationships, communication and human connection are an important part of my work. I work with individuals and couples around communication, emotional connection, trust, boundaries and recurring relationship patterns. This isn’t about deciding who is right or wrong, it’s about understanding what is happening between people, what may sit underneath the way each person responds and helping you develop healthier ways of communicating, understanding and connecting with one another.
I work integratively, which means I don’t follow a fixed script or expect you to fit one therapeutic model. I listen deeply, remain curious, notice patterns and make connections, while also being prepared to challenge when challenge is needed. Some people need space to explore and process, while others are ready for structure, direction and action. Often, the most valuable work comes from finding the right balance between the two.
Alongside counselling and psychotherapy, my background in life coaching allows our work to move beyond understanding alone when appropriate. This can include confidence and mindset, personal direction, relationships, business and career, or health and wellbeing. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from our work. Sometimes life is functioning perfectly well on the surface, but you know you want something to be different.
My professional training spans therapeutic counselling, integrative psychotherapy, psychodynamic approaches, life coaching and human behaviour. I am a Registered Member MBACP with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, alongside registered membership of the Association for Coaching, NCPS and ACCPH. I’ve also volunteered as a Samaritans Listening Volunteer and continue to invest in my professional and personal development.
Above everything, I care about the people I work with. Trust, honesty and genuine human connection allow us to move beyond surface-level conversations and explore what genuinely matters to you. My role isn’t to tell you who you should be or pretend to have all the answers. It is to help you understand yourself more deeply, see what you may not yet be seeing and support you in creating meaningful change in your life.
I work with individuals and couples, both in person and online across the UK. I offer a free initial telephone or Zoom consultation so we can talk about what you are looking for, you can ask any questions and, most importantly, decide whether I feel like the right fit for you.
