About Mary Mortimer

I’m doing a Master’s degree in Integrative Psychotherapy with Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling and Middlesex University.

Psychotherapy (sometimes thought of as long-term or open-ended counselling) can be helpful for people experiencing many kinds of distress, arising from past events or present circumstances. Working long term allows support for working at a deeper level, and a “working through” of events in the past that are affecting life today.

My professional background is in nursing, midwifery and health visiting in the NHS. I also worked with the Children’s Society, supporting children who were failing to thrive and their families.
I’m experienced in counselling in various settings, having undertaken a range of counselling courses, including a one year part time with South West London College and three years part time with Wessex Counselling Service. I taught Co-Counselling for the Bath and Birmingham Co-Counselling communities. I volunteered as a bereavement counsellor with Cruse Bereavement Care in Swindon for two years.
I’m now well established in a Master’s degree in Integrative Psychotherapy with Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling and Middlesex University. “Integrative” means that while we study several theorists and schools of therapy, we develop our own approach, using the theories that we find most useful. We have much practical experience on the course and a placement, and all my client work is rigorously supervised, so that I give of my best, individually tailored attention to each client.
I hold theory lightly and have a broadly client-centred way of working. I aim to provide a safe, non-judgmental, confidential space for clients to say and express anything they want, to understand their feelings and to explore possibilities and choices, as they find their own path in life. For me, the most important thing is to develop a trusting, open and accepting relationship in which clients can express and make sense of feelings and find their way forward.
I’m a trainee member of UKCP and abide by their and BCPC’s codes of practice and ethics.
I have an inclusive policy, accepting adult clients (of 18 and over) from any background, race, colour, nationality, religion, belief and sexuality.
Please leave me a message and I’ll contact you as soon as I can. Thank you.
