About Dr. Richard Wilkes, Beacons Psychology Services

It is of the utmost importance to me that you feel safe and trusting in therapeutic work and my aim is to provide a warm, positive and empathic environment from which we can start to understand your difficulties and consider whether changes might be made.

Whilst this is my ultimate priority, in choosing to work with me you can be assured of a professional with the highest levels of clinical training. As a counselling psychologist, I have been educated and practice in a wide variety of models and seek to provide a service tailor made to individual’s needs, preferences and strengths. This ensures that you have the optimum care whatever you may be currently facing. My duty to continuing professional development ensures that I keep up to date with the latest advances in Evidence Based Practice and our responsibility to receive ongoing supervision means that I have a space to consider my effectiveness, communication and direction in meeting your needs.

I have been working in a psychological capacity since 2000 and qualified as a counselling psychologist in 2008. As well as working in private practice, I work as a senior psychologist for secondary adult mental health services and have specialised in adult work throughout my training and career.

I have been trained in a wide range of methods, including:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
Psychodynamic
Humanistic psychotherapy.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) (at Level II)

I have also had extensive supervision in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) and Schema Focused Therapy.

Who I work with.

I work with adults (17+) where psychological therapy within the community would be appropriate. You may have been given a formal diagnosis, you may have a concern with mood or anxiety, maybe you have concerns regarding the way you see yourself or the relationships you establish, you may face an important decision or want a space to take stock on your life and consider directions for the future. Psychological work with me is for all of these situations and questions.

Getting Started

Please call me on the mobile number displayed or send me an email through counselling pages. There will be times at which I am unlikely to be able to answer my mobile. However, I will always reply to a voice message as soon as I possibly can.

Often making the decision to seek psychological therapy is a difficult one. Meeting new people is often an anxious process, let alone when you do so to talk about things that may be very personal to you. Things will get easier though and I will be here to make the process as comfortable as it possibly can be by taking things as the pace you wish to and arranging relaxing surroundings for us to meet in.

Work with me is confidential. However, in order to maintain the standards of my practice I  may speak about our work with another psychologically trained professional; this is an arrangement that all those practising psychological therapies should be engaged with to ensure the quality, effectiveness and ethics of their therapy. I am also duty bound to protect your safety that of others and to report matters of serious illegality. We can discuss how you wish for me to communicate with other people, should this be your preference.
