If you have never experienced counselling before you may be wondering what it is all about, in simple words, counselling is about being able to talk through any issues you may have to someone who is professionally trained to listen and support you without judging you, whilst working in a safe, confidential environment which is bound by a code of ethics.
The amount of sessions needed varies between people it really depends on the individual and the issues they bring. Counselling can help in the short and long term and research shows that over 60 percent of clients show signs of improvement after just seven sessions. Based on this I usually suggest budgeting for around 6 sessions and this can be reviewed on a weekly basis.
There are many issues that bring people to counselling and the list below is not exhaustive, sometimes people don’t even know why they feel the way they do, but something in their life isn’t right and they just feel `stuck` is the best way to describe how they feel.
Depression, low self-esteem, confidence building, rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence, anxiety, anger, trauma, lack of motivation, relationship issues, marriage breakdown, affairs, mid-life crisis, military life issues, deployment, injury, PTSD, life transitions, resettlement issues, bereavement, grief and loss, including sudden death and suicide, miscarriage or still birth, eating disorders, alcohol and substance abuse and many more besides.
No matter how great or small the issue, if it matters to you then it is important and counselling could be the answer you are looking for.
