About Emily McCoy Counselling

What is counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy. Counselling takes place in a private and confidential place where a client can explore aspects of their life and feelings, talking about them openly and freely in a way which is rarely possible with family and friends. This is because counsellors are trained to really listen, to put themselves aside in order to understand the client’s perspective and to be non-judgemental.

Counselling works most effectively when there is a relationship of trust, honesty and support. It can help you to come to terms with past and present experiences. At times, counselling can be challenging but its benefits can be life changing. I bring expertise in listening, empathy and problem solving. You bring the knowledge about your life and what has worked for you (or not) to date. Together we will work collaboratively to identify problems and possible solutions.

Who is counselling for?

People from all backgrounds come to counselling. People typically come to counselling when they feel they cannot make a change by themselves and need space outside their “normal lives” to talk things through.

Qualifications and experience

I am experienced working with adults and young people on a wide range of issues including; anxiety, anger, depression, self harm, eating disorders, low self-esteem, relationship issues, work problems, procrastination, stress, loss and bereavement.

I have a Diploma in Gestalt counselling which is complemented by courses in Transactional Analysis and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. As part of my membership I am committed to ongoing professional development.

In addition to my private practice, I work within a sixth form college and have previously counselled adults receiving support through local council services.

As a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy I am bound by its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

My approach to training is that I am always learning, either formally (by regularly going on courses) or informally from my clients and peers. It is important to me that I continue to learn and grow as a professional counsellor in order to provide the most effective support possible.

I receive regular supervision for work from a qualified counselling supervisor which ensures I am working to best meet the needs of my clients. I also hold professional insurance and a full CRB clearance.

You are in safe hands.
