About James Johnson Counselling

Life can be challenging and stressful. Friends and family support can be invaluable, but can only help us so much, sometimes a trained professional listener is needed to help us regain our sense of well-being.

I work with individuals and couples who are facing difficult and sensitive personal issues. My concern is to help you get to the roots of what is hurting you quickly, and effectively help you resolve the issues that are holding you back from living your life to the full.

Individual Counselling

You may feel dissatisfied with life or struggling with a lack of direction or sense of purpose. The issues you are facing may be due to a recent event or be longstanding issues that you are now willing to face.

I can help you to gain clarity on what the issues are and what part your past has to play on your present. With greater awareness of your behaviours, feelings and thoughts you will be able to move forward with renewed confidence and energy.

In the sessions I will supervise you gently and thoughtfully, helping you to focus on what hurts, in a safe, confidential and compassionate way. What tends to happen is that my clients feel immediately better after the first session, as if a burden has been lifted, and a greater sense of well-being develops as our work together develops.

I am particularly experienced in helping people move on from anxiety, depression, stress, bereavement, addictions, eating disorders, loss, trauma, relationship, anger management and self-confidence issues.

Couples Counselling

In couples counselling I excel at facilitating and handling avoidance and conflict. In couples therapy you will be encouraged to avoid blame and take responsibility; working issues through together as a couple in a safe, calm and supportive way. There will be no anger or rage allowed in the counselling space. I will help you recognise the issues in your relationship and your responsibilities moving forward. (Please see my website blog – “How to Benefit from Couples Counselling” for more info)

Couples therapy is a highly specialised form of therapy and I would always recommend you visit someone who is a Trained Couples Therapist.

Benefits of Counselling

Through working together, either in Individual or Couples Counselling, I will help you explore the issues at hand and help you facilitate sustainable change resulting in:

Relief from emotional pain

Increased self-confidence

Greater trust in yourself and others

Enhanced personal life, career, and close relationships

The ability to make your relationships more satisfying and intimate

A greater sense of well-being

My Approach:

I am committed to helping people overcome anxiety, bereavement, depression, addictions, eating disorders, stress, loss, trauma, anger management and self-confidence issues.
I am committed to helping individuals and couples move out of negative and painful patterns of relating, so that they can enjoy full and rich relationships that are life-enhancing, enduring and rewarding.
The core of my work is about noticing the ways in which we judge or reject ourselves and helping clients to develop greater self-compassion and self-acceptance. This work alone has a profoundly positive impact on my clients lives.
I can teach Mindfulness skills that will help your mind develop more resilience and help you side-step anxiety and depression.
The foundation of my individual and relationship counselling approach is holistic. I view the whole of you in the context of your unique needs, values and history. This allows me to support you in accessing your inherent resources and strengths. By paying attention to what your strengths are, what is working well, my clients are enabled and empowered, not only to solve problems and gain new perspectives, but also to achieve higher levels of hope, resilience and confidence.
In line with The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) ‘Ethical Guidelines for Best Practice’ I undertake regular supervision and training. This means that my practice is regularly reviewed and supported so as to offer you the best service possible.

You can take advantage of both or either, it is up to you. If you feel we don’t ‘click’ then I will be happy to provide you with referrals to other therapists.
