About N G Counselling

I provide individuals with a space to talk about your feelings without being told what to do. I believe that it’s important for you to set the agenda, so that we explore the areas that matter to you. We can’t alter the things that have happened to us, but looking at past experiences can help us to understand why we react as we do in the present – this is not about blaming people, but moving towards acceptance. Often this process leads to change. If it seems most helpful to explore your circumstances in some depth, we’ll keep our sessions open-ended; if you have a more specific issue that can be worked on in the shorter term, we can agree a set number of sessions. We will then arrange to meet once a week, usually at the same time. You can decide to end counselling at any point, and we will regularly review how the sessions are going.

As a couples counsellor I think it is important that you both feel you are being listened to, by me, and by each other. We will explore why you have come for counselling, and work out together the main areas you would like to cover in our sessions. This may include looking at issues such as communication, conflict, sexual difficulties, affairs, and domestic violence. I aim to help you to be honest with each other about your needs and expectations, and to negotiate how you might each work to improve your relationship. It may be that you’re not sure if you want to stay in your relationship, or you may be quite certain that you want to separate. Either way we can use the sessions to explore how you can cope with the difficult feelings you may be experiencing. Couples counselling tends to be fairly short-term, typically lasting around 10-12 weeks, but this can be flexible according to your needs. Again, you can decide to end counselling at any point, and we will regularly review how the sessions are going.

You can find me on Twitter at @ngcounselling, and on Facebook at Nicola Gadsby Counselling, where I highlight useful articles and blogs that offer insight into all kinds of mental health issues. I also write posts at Perspective, where I explore themes that interest me, and that I hope might interest you. Recently I have written about the challenges of taking the plunge to have some counselling, mindfulness, and how to increase connection with your partner.
