About Julia Johnson

It can be good to talk things through …..

Most people at some point in their lives can be faced with challenges that are difficult to understand and come to terms with. This is when it can be helpful to talk things over with a trained counsellor.

Counselling can give you time away from the pressures of everyday life to get a clearer understanding of what may have led to issues in your life. Counselling can help you to reflect on the way you think and the behaviours that follow, without fear of criticism, rejection or retaliation. It can help you look at how you might be repeating unhelpful patterns of action and thought.

Counselling can help you unfold the difficulties n your life by enabling you to focus on the major issue. A counsellor can give you their undivided attention and a confidential space where you can work through challenges that may be difficult to understand and come to terms with. This can be very liberating, giving you an opportunity for greater freedom in thinking and behaviours, helping you make changes that can move you towards a happier and more fulfilling way of life.

People often have a lot more resources and skills than they are able to recognise, especially during times of stress.

Some of our work together in the sessions will be to reawaken those skills you may have forgotten and build on them, to help you clarify the challenges that you are now facing.

We can also look at the different choices you may have and seek different perspectives that may be helpful, enabling you to understand that you have the power to make changes in your life that will not only enhance your well-being but also of those around you.

Sessions are normally for one hour, at a time arranged between us. I offer short and long term counselling and psychotherapy.

Some people have three to six sessions while others might decide they would like longer term therapy. You can finish therapy when you choose.

Fees: Individuals £48.00 per hour, couples £60.00 per hour. (Prices may be subject to change., at least one months notice will be given.)
Please be aware that if you need to cancel a session, you must do so during normal office hours of 9am to 5.30pm, giving at least 48 hours notice, otherwise the fee will be charged. Please note this does not include Saturday, Sundays or Bank Holidays. For example if you wish to cancel a session scheduled for 10am on Monday morning, you need to cancel before 10am on the previous Thursday (or Wednesday if the Friday is a Bank Holiday). With reasonable notice (48hours) I will try to find you another appointment during the same week your appointment is in. If that is not possible the session will be forfeit and the fee will be charged.

About Julia

Having studied psychology at Sussex University, I worked and travelled for a few years, spending time in Greece, America and London. Settling in Plymouth I worked in the business world gaining a good understanding of it’s inevitable stresses and strains. In 1999 I embarked on an Integrated Therapeutic Counselling Course; which spanned many therapeutic areas and culminated in achieving an Advanced Diploma. I have worked in the voluntary sector, with a placement at the Glenborne Unit at Derriford Hospital, for the Psychotherapy department at Ridgeview.
Working in the business world, being with clients as they work through their issues and life itself with everything it throws at us, has given me a wide depth of human experience.

My training is in Integrative Therapy which means that I will use a variety of therapeutic approaches depending on what feels most useful and productive for the client. These approaches are drawn from psychodynamic therapy, looking how the past may have influenced where you are today; Person Centred, which means that the therapy can be client lead and gives unconditional, genuine and non-judgemental support throughout; Cognitive Behavioural, where we might look at how our thoughts could lead to our behaviours.
