About Kelly Paterson DipHIC, mBACP, counselling in Bristol

About me

I am a fully qualified therapeutic counsellor, with a focus on helping clients develop a more positive and accepting sense of self, which in turn can reduce symptoms like anxiety & depression, and increase feelings of wellbeing and engagement with others. I practice near Whiteladies Rd, Clifton and in Westbury-on-Trym.

I work relationally – that is, I believe that the therapeutic relationship we develop will provide a safe place for you to work through the issues that bring you to counselling. You will become able to recognise and process old patterns, and test out new ways of relating – to yourself, friends, colleagues and family.

Alongside the fundamental qualities of empathy, acceptance and authenticity, I’ll bring humour and challenge to our interactions. I welcome clients experiencing a wide range of issues, such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationships or loss. I have experience in drug and alcohol issues, and my background in the arts gives me an understanding of the creative process.

How I work

I work in a client-centred way so our sessions will always be led by you. I will offer support, validation, reflection and challenge to help you understand yourself better. The exact way we work will be different for each client, tailored to fit with your personality and what you want to achieve.

Getting started with counselling

If you feel ready to take the first step, give me a call or send me an email and we can arrange an initial session.

This first meeting is an opportunity for us to get to know each other – research shows that a good connection with your counsellor is one of the most important factors for therapeutic change. We will discuss the issues that bring you to counselling; what you might like to get from our work; and a bit of life history too. Then, if you decide that you would like to continue, we can agree a regular slot for your sessions each week, decide on whether you would benefit from short or longer term work, and agree on the outcomes we are working towards. We can have regular reviews to make sure we are on track.

Qualifications

I am a registered member (MBACP) of BACP, the leading body for counselling and psychotherapy in the UK. I hold a Diploma in Humanistic and Integrative Counselling from Bath Centre of Psychotherapy and Counselling, which is also accredited by BACP.
