About Being Heard Counselling – Karen Hurley

Hello, I am Karen, an integrative counsellor, working from a person centred perspective. This means I use a number of different types of counselling theories in my work, depending on the issue(s) you wish to bring to counselling and most importantly what feels right for you. I am a warm and caring person and will help you understand how you are feeling and what to do next. You can talk about whatever you want to in confidence and will not be judged.

Over the last few years I have provided counselling in a GP practice and also in a voluntary organisation who support unpaid family carers.

Prior to training as a counsellor I worked in the NHS for 10 years as a Complaints and PALS Manager. I provided support to patients, their families and carers on a daily basis and have extensive experience of supporting people in distress as a result of illness, disability or as a result of bereavement.

Registration

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work in accordance with their Ethical Framework for Good Practice. I have regular supervision in accordance with the requirements of BACP and undertake ongoing Continuing Professional Development.
Special interest and experience

I have experience and a special interest in providing counselling to unpaid family carers and to carers whose caring role has come to an end. This can be helpful to address feelings of loneliness and isolation and to look at strategies for looking after your own health and wellbeing.

I also have experience of working with:
• relationship issues
• family problems
• depression
• anxiety
• loss and bereavement
• work problems
• anger
• guilt
• life changes

I understand that deciding whether to try counselling and/or choosing a counsellor can feel difficult. I hope the information in my profile will be helpful with those choices. However, please do contact me if you would like to talk to me about this, or would like some further information to help you make a decision.
