About Dr Suman Prinjha (PhD, MBACP)

Have you been feeling anxious, depressed, or burnt-out with work? Are you dealing with illness, relationship issues, or going through lots of difficult changes? We all face times when we feel confused, stuck or lacking in clarity. Yet we’d like to feel happy, confident and clear. During these challenging or uncertain times, talking to someone who listens, yet has distance from the issue, can really help.

How counselling can help

The decision to look for a therapist and start having counselling can be daunting, yet it can also be the first step to making sense of what might be happening and your thoughts about it. Sometimes it’s hard to talk to family or friends, which can leave us feeling very alone. Counselling offers a space to talk about the things that you might have been bottling up or struggling with.

What to expect from our sessions

I offer compassionate, non-judgemental, confidential yet proactive therapy in a safe and supportive space. Using an integrative person-centred approach to counselling, putting you at the heart of our work together, our sessions would involve working together towards understanding your thoughts, feelings and any actions that you might want to take. A warm, respectful and trusting relationship would be an important part of working together at a pace that feels right for you.

I work with people on a wide range of issues and particularly anxiety, depression, work stress, relationships, and living with illness. I tailor the way I work to each individual and use different approaches depending on each person. This can include CBT, solution focussed therapy, psychodynamic counselling, transactional analysis as well as other approaches. I am happy to work short-term and long-term depending on the issues you’d like to work on, and with people of all ages.

My experience

I have worked with adults and young people both in the NHS and in private practice. I draw on over 18 years of experience gained at the University of Oxford, where I work part-time as a health researcher, as well as valuable experience gained in NHS counselling and in personal development coaching. I have published research papers on people’s experiences of physical and mental health issues (https://www.phc.ox.ac.uk/team/suman-prinjha).
